Back in 2013, when we moved to the beautiful city of Boston to go to college, we were struck by the fact that we were not living under our parents' roof anymore. We had to adapt to a different culture, learn a new language, and adjust to a new and fast-paced city; while learning how to live on our own, which meant cooking our own meals, washing our clothes, and keeping our grades up while at the same time working part-time jobs to pay for our rent.

Our first year was hard. We were utterly overwhelmed with all those lifestyle changes. However, what affected us the most was how our eating habits changed because of our circumstances. We often ate at our university's cafeteria, which didn't have too many healthy options, and most of its food was highly processed. We struggled to find time to cook our meals at home and therefore, maintain the healthy body we wanted.

To top it all off, during that first year Andre injured her knee and had to undergo surgery not one, but twice. Because of the injury, Andre had to be on crutches over three months, which made her lose a lot of muscle mass and her leg muscles atrophied.

But then came a turning point. After more than a year of not following a healthy eating routine and a consistent workout schedule, our bodies were taking a toll, and our self-esteem was affected. We knew that if we continued down that path, we were never going to have a healthy body or mind. It was enough, and we were ready to commit to change!

We started by stepping into UMass Gym, and luckily for us, we had a couple of friends who are personal trainers, and we started working out with them. They taught us fundamentals and showed us how beneficial it could be to strengthen your body and your mind. They got us hooked into fitness!

Every day we watched different workout routines on YouTube and tried them out for ourselves. We were trying to learn and apply everything we could. As time went by, we started to see our bodies change. Our cores got stronger, our legs more toned, and our arms more defined. We loved how our bodies were starting to look.

It didn't take long until some of our friends, and random girls at the gym began to notice our changes too. Some of them even approached us and started asking us to train them. At first, it felt weird, but we liked that we were in a position to make a positive impact on other girls' lives.

Fast forward a couple of months and both of us got certified as personal trainers and took several courses in nutrition.

We were hired by our university's gym to teach fitness classes to large groups of girls. The more classes we taught, the more we realized that to us, there's no greater sense of fulfillment than the joy of seeing other girls accomplish their fitness goals and gain back their self-confidence.

We loved what we were doing, and we wanted to take our impact beyond the city of Boston and help girls all around the world achieve their dream body and live a healthy lifestyle. That's when Muscle Sisters was born.
